Seated Yeongeunsa Temple Stone Buddha
영은사석조여래좌상 · 靈隱寺石造如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Buddha statue at Yeongeunsa Temple in Geumhyeon-ri, Goseo-myeon, Damyang-gun, Jeollanam-do, has the Buddha's body and its halo, a nimbus symbolising sacred radiance, carved from a single stone. On the head rises a topknot-shaped usnisha, the protuberance symbolising the Buddha's wisdom, and the round face has somewhat stylised features. The body is flat, and the robe, which covers the left shoulder, is carved with distinctive U-shaped folds standing out in relief. The large boat-shaped halo behind the body encircles the head halo with a single line and is carved with flame patterns along its outer edge. This statue, in a style similar to the Stone Seated Buddha at Dogapsa Temple in Yeongam, Jeollanam-do, a treasure, well illustrates the regional school of Buddhist sculpture that flourished at the end of Silla and the beginning of Goryeo.
