Seated Stone Buddha at Ogapsa Temple Site, Chungju
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This Buddha statue was discovered at the site of Ogapsa Temple in Mojeom-ri, Angseong-myeon, Chungju, Chungcheongbuk-do. Aside from part of the face and the head having broken away, it survives in almost complete condition. The gentle face gives a human impression, yet the short neck, the lower body disproportionately large in relation to the upper body, and the physique concealed beneath thick robes give it a somewhat unbalanced appearance. While this sets it apart from the realistic sculpture of Unified Silla, it also shows the adoption of older stylistic traditions. Roof tiles inscribed with the Jin-dynasty reign name Myeongchang and with the characters for Ogapsa were excavated at the temple site, indicating that this statue was made in the early Goryeo period.
