Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Yangse Jeonghyogak (Two-Generation Filial Piety Memorial Hall) was erected in 1855, the sixth year of King Cheoljong, to honour the filial devotion of Kim Bok-gyu of the Gimhae Kim clan and his son Kim Gi-jong. It was originally built in Sanggeo village, Samcheon-dong, Jeonju, but when Samcheon-dong was redeveloped as an apartment complex under Jeonju's urban planning in 1981, it was relocated to its present site at Jeongwol-ri, Imsil-eup. Inside the memorial hall stand two memorial steles, one for the filial son Kim Bok-gyu and one for the filial son Kim Gi-jong, and the hanging plaques bear the inscriptions "Hyodeok Yeongyeongdang" (Hall of Filial Virtue and Prosperity) on the inside and "Yangse Jeonghyogak" on the outside. All of these were written by Kim Jeong-hui, pen name Chusa (1786-1856). According to the epitaph of Kim Gi-jong's eldest son, Kim Yeong-gon (1813-1877), it states: "In accordance with his father's last wishes, we asked Wanong [another sobriquet of Kim Jeong-hui] to compose the inscription. Wanong's writing was extremely concise and solemn." The filial son Kim Bok-gyu (1742-1819) was so devoted to his parents that he fulfilled every act of filial duty until his father's death when he was sixteen; moved by a certain Daoist master, he is said to have revived his dying father from the brink of death on several occasions. His son Kim Gi-jong (1783-1850) likewise inherited his father's filial devotion and was extremely devoted to his parents; when they died, he kept a three-year vigil beside their graves, and it is said that his grief-stricken wailing echoed through the mountains and streams like the roar of a tiger, so that the village came to be renamed "Hodong" (Tiger Village). Kim Gi-jong wrote the preface to the Jinmuk daesa yujeokgo (Record of the Life of Master Jinmuk, 1852), said to have been compiled by the monk Choui Seonsa. Although a Confucian scholar, he was moved by the life of Master Jinmuk and worked hard to collect and publish an account of the master's deeds.
