Sim Yeon-won Spirit-path Stele
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This stele was erected in 1560 (the 15th year of King Myeongjong) to commemorate Sim Yeon-won (1491-1558), a civil official of the reign of King Myeongjong of Joseon. His clan seat was Cheongsong and his pen name was Boam. He rose to the position of Chief State Councillor in 1551 and was invested as Buwongun (a princely title granted to distinguished officials) of Cheoncheon. He was posthumously enshrined as a meritorious subject alongside King Myeongjong in the royal ancestral shrine. The spirit-path stele stands below the burial ground and takes the form of a stele set on a tortoise-shaped base with a dragon-head capstone (gwibu-isu). The tortoise shell of the base and the lotus-petal pedestal placed on top of it are carved with considerable volume, whereas the tortoise's head is rendered simply. The capstone is carved with a realistic and finely detailed depiction of two dragons contesting for a wish-fulfilling jewel. The epitaph was composed by Jeong Sa-ryong and written out by Song In, a celebrated calligrapher of his day skilled in the Songseol style (the style of the Yuan-dynasty calligrapher Zhao Mengfu), while the seal-script title was written by Sim Jeon, a nephew of Sim Yeon-won.
