Seosan Kim Du-jing Tombstone
서산김두징묘비 · 瑞山金斗徵墓碑

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the tombstone of Kim Du-jing (1646–1678), a scholar of the mid-Joseon period. Because his fourth-generation ancestor Kim Hong-uk had incurred the wrath of King Hyojong, Kim Du-jing himself was never able to take office and devoted his life entirely to scholarship, receiving the post of Deputy Minister of Personnel only after his death. The stele consists of a body erected on a base stone and topped with a roof stone. The base is tall and square, carved with cloud patterns on all four sides and a lotus design on its upper surface. The stone used for the body of the stele is a rare marine stone from China. On each face of the body, the epitaph title is carved at the top and the main text below, both displaying outstanding calligraphy and carving. The underside of the roof stone is carved with various designs imitating wooden architecture, while its upper surface bears a carving of two dragons coiled together. The stele was erected in 1721, the first year of King Gyeongjong of Joseon, out of profound filial devotion by his son Kim Yu-gyeong, who during the reign of King Yeongjo held such posts as Daesaheon, Minister of Works, Bujehak and Doseungji.
