Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Wondong Community Compact (hyangyak) was established in 1572 (the 5th year of King Seonjo) and has been maintained for more than 420 years. About twenty volumes survive, including a Hyangyakrok (Record of the Community Compact) compiled in 1638 (the 16th year of King Injo) and Pyochangrok (Records of Commendation) produced in 1675 (the 1st year of King Sukjong), 1745 (the 21st year of King Yeongjo) and 1780 (the 4th year of King Jeongjo). Each volume is made of hanji, traditional Korean paper, mostly of the changhoji (window-paper) type, and their sizes vary slightly. The volumes that survive today include the Woncheonhyangan, Woncheondongyakjungsuan, Woncheonwondongsuan, Dongyakjungsuan, Woncheondonghyangyakan and Wiwonyeongi. These are valued as important source material for research into the social history of Korea from the mid to the late Joseon period.
