Seated Samcheok Cheoneunsa Temple Wooden Amitabha Buddha Triad
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

The seated Amitabha Buddha triad enshrined in the Geungnakbojeon Hall of Cheoneunsa Temple consists of three human-sized statues. Carved and assembled from wood in seated postures, they represent the Amitabha Buddha, the Bodhisattva of Compassion (Avalokitesvara), and the Bodhisattva of the Earth Treasury (Ksitigarbha). Overall the expressions, robes and hand gestures (mudra) of the three figures are similarly rendered, giving a dignified and elegant impression. On the basis of the carving technique and stylistic features, and in particular the votive objects found inside the statues, they are presumed to have been made in the Joseon period, between the mid-15th and the 16th century. The Amitabha Buddha at the centre is the principal image and, at 101cm, is the largest of the three. The Avalokitesvara image to its left is the left attendant figure, standing 96.5cm tall and wearing a jewelled crown. The Ksitigarbha image to the right of the Amitabha Buddha is the right attendant figure, standing 87cm tall, with a shaven, bald head. All three statues share the same hand gesture, the right hand raised before the chest and the left hand laid on the leg - the hapumjungsaengin, one of the mudras assumed by the Amitabha Buddha.
