Sinhyeongho Old House, Cheongju
청주 신형호 고가 · 淸原 申鑅浩 古家

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis tile-roofed house was built in 1881, the 18th year of Emperor Gojong of Joseon. It originally comprised a main hall (anchae), a men's quarters (sarangchae), a storage hall (gokganchae), a courtyard, an outer hall (araechae) and a stable hall (mabuchae), but towards the end of the Korean Empire the Japanese army set fire to it because Sin Jeong-sik, who lived there at the time, had provided the Righteous Army with food and lodging; only the main hall survives today. The main hall is arranged around a two-bay wooden-floored hall (daecheong), with a room having a kitchen and a wooden floor (geonneonbang) to its left, and, to its right, a master bedroom (anbang) with a kitchen and floor together with an upper room (utbang). It has a five-bay front and a four-bay side in an L-shaped (giyeok) plan, and its roof is a hip-and-gable roof (paljakjibung) whose side silhouette resembles the character 八 (eight). Sin Hyeong-ho was an independence activist from Inchari, Gadeok-myeon, who was preparing an uprising in Cheongju - producing and printing a declaration of independence and warning notices in readiness for an independence demonstration - but was discovered beforehand and served more than a year in prison.
