Yun Du-su (1533–1601), a civil official of the mid-Joseon period, took up his post as governor of Hwanghae Province in 1571, the fourth year of King Seonjo; ten years later, in 1581, the fourteenth year of King Seonjo, this painting was made depicting the scenery of Haeju Eupseong, the walled town, and the procession from that time. At the top of the picture is written the title "Ryuyeongsuyanggwanyeon-ji-do" (留營首陽館延命之圖), and beneath it, in ink and light colour, are depicted Suyanggwan Hall of Haeju Eupseong, a general view of the government office, and the governor's procession. In the upper right is a seven-character verse, and below the picture are recorded the names, official posts and clan seats of the twenty-four clerks who accompanied him. This format follows the composition of gyehoedo, paintings commemorating official gatherings that were popular among the bureaucratic class of the sixteenth century. The calligraphy was written by Yun Geun-su, Yun Du-su's younger brother. The painting itself is presumed to be a later copy, but it retains traces of the painting style of the latter half of the sixteenth century. In the distant mountains of the background, short lines and dots can be seen that recall elements of the style of the An Gyeon school of the early Joseon period, and the way the government office, with its roof rendered only in simple outline, and the distant mountains are treated is close to the sixteenth-century manner. Near the hillside at the bottom of the picture, trees shaped like the character 丁, made by laying the brush sideways and then drawing the trunk, are a technique found from the sixteenth century onward. The governor's procession shown at the very bottom of the painting resembles the banchado, or procession diagrams, found in the Royal Protocols of the seventeenth century, giving the work something of the character of a documentary record. Both this painting and the written record it carries are of considerable historical value as a record of a local official's arrival at his new post.
