This cathedral, built in 1935, stands on a small hill on the lower slopes of Uamsan Mountain, overlooking the whole of Cheongju. The building has square pillars set on cornerstones atop a low platform. The roof is a hipped-and-gabled (paljak) roof, so called because its profile echoes the shape of the character 八 ("eight"), and is covered with Korean-style tiles. The outer walls are finished in brick and concrete, and the inner walls in lime plaster. The building is thought to reflect well the indigenising intent of the early Seonggonghoe (Anglican) priests. Combining the structure of a traditional Korean house with a Western form, it is an eclectic style of church architecture in which Western and Korean building traditions are fused, making it a valuable piece of heritage through which to examine both the adoption of Western architecture and the modern transformation of traditional Korean building.
