These are calligraphic writings and paintings by Seokjeong Yi Jeong-jik. Building on the Neo-Confucian learning he had mastered from an early age, Seokjeong went on to study Western scholarship as well, becoming the first in Korea to introduce the philosophy of Kant and leaving behind a work comparing and analysing it alongside Zhu Xi's Neo-Confucianism. He also studied widely in Chinese medicine, astrological calendrical science, geography, divination, calligraphy and ink painting, and after returning home he systematised the learning he had acquired in some thirty volumes, including the Yeonseoksanbang Mijeong Mungo. His writings include the eleven-volume Yeonseoksanbang Mijeong Mungo as well as the Yeonseoksanbang Mijeong Sicho, the Sangseodaejeon, the Mansarok, and the Sijeonilgwa. His works are considered to have played an important role in transforming the classical scholarly system of the Joseon period into a modern system of learning.
