Seated Wooden Avalokitesvara held at Gangneunggwaneumsa Temple
강릉관음사소장목조관음보살좌상 · 江陵 觀音寺 所藏 木造觀音菩薩坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis wooden statue of Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva is presumed to have been made in the transitional period between the late Goryeo and early Joseon dynasties. It contains no votive objects placed inside the statue, and its original appearance is difficult to make out beneath a thick layer of later regilding. It has also undergone partial repairs, evident in the unnatural left arm and in fingers of differing thickness. Even so, it is considered worthy of designation and preservation as an extremely rare early-Joseon wooden bodhisattva statue seated in the relaxed, one-knee-raised royal-ease posture, of which very few examples survive in Gangwon State.
