This building was erected by the Chungju Bak clan for their descendants to cultivate and study scholarship. It was first built in 1520, the 15th year of King Jungjong of Joseon, and according to the Heunghakdanggi (Record of Heunghakdang), it was rebuilt during the reign of King Sukjong (r. 1674–1720), and rebuilt again during the reigns of King Yeongjo (r. 1724–1776) and Emperor Gojong (r. 1863–1907). The building faces south and consists of four bays across the front and two bays along the side. The roof is a hipped-and-gabled (paljak) roof, whose sides resemble the shape of the character 八 (eight); the central two bays are floored with wide wooden planking to form a spacious open hall, while the rooms at either end are heated ondol rooms.
