Daeungjeon Hall of Seongheungsa Temple, Changwon
창원 성흥사 대웅전 · 昌原 聖興寺 大雄殿

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krSeongheungsa Temple was founded in 833, the eighth year of King Heungdeok of Silla, by State Preceptor Muyeom. It is said that, early in King Heungdeok's reign, after Muyeom repelled Japanese pirates who had invaded the Ungdong area, the king rewarded him with property and land, and Muyeom chose a site at Gucheon-dong to build the temple. At the time of its founding it was a large temple where more than five hundred monks resided, but 276 years after its establishment it was destroyed by fire and rebuilt at Daejang-ri. In 1668, the ninth year of King Hyeonjong of Joseon, it burned down again and was rebuilt at Gucheon-dong, before being built at its present location in 1789, the thirteenth year of King Jeongjo. The Daeungjeon Hall of Seongheungsa Temple enshrines the Buddha Sakyamuni. The building has three bays across the front and three bays to the side, and its roof is a gable roof, whose side profile resembles the character 人; but rather than following the usual gentle slope of such roofs, it is very steeply pitched, giving something of the impression of a hip-and-gable roof. The overall architectural style shows the features of the late Joseon period, and, contrary to what the records state, it is thought that the Daeungjeon Hall has undergone considerable change from its original form through recent repairs.
