This is a typical nineteenth-century white porcelain bottle with a long neck and a low centre of gravity. The rim is finished small and rounded, the neck is straight and of even width, and the lower body flares out broadly, giving an impression of fullness and stability. The bluish-tinted glaze and clay body are judged to be of the finest grade (sangpum gapbeon), fired in the first firing of the kiln. This underglaze cobalt-blue porcelain is notable for depicting, in fine brushwork rarely seen in ware from the Bunwon period (the government-run royal kiln), a fortress and a landscape, the composition being distinctive in rendering a full riverside view through a variety of motifs. The surface is entirely covered with a clean, clear white glaze, and the cobalt blue fires to a vivid colour. Although there is a trace of a minor repair by adhesion at the rim, the piece is notable for depicting an actual, real scene rather than the stereotyped, print-album-style landscape patterns commonly seen on underglaze cobalt-blue white porcelain of the late Joseon period.
