Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a stone-walled garrison fortress built in 1378, the fourth year of King U of Goryeo, by Bae Geuk-ryeom to defend against Japanese pirate raids (waegu), serving as the base of the Right Gyeongsang Province military command. In 1426, the eighth year of King Sejong, the Left and Right Province garrisons were merged to form the Gyeongsang-do garrison fortress; after the Right Province garrison was relocated to Jindo Island in 1583, the sixteenth year of King Seonjo, the site seems to have been used as Hapo-jin, a garrison post. The fortress reportedly had four main gates, along with buildings such as the Uimanchang and Hoeyeonggo storehouses. Outside the fortress, a moat was dug around the perimeter and a bridge was installed. The outer walls were built with large stones, giving an impression of great solidity, and the foundation stones at the base were laid protruding outward. The inner wall was built in a stepped form, narrowing as it rises, a characteristic feature of early Joseon fortress-construction technique. Today, about 80 metres of the fortress wall survive around the site of the north gate, surrounded on all sides by apartment blocks and houses.
