Underglaze Cobalt Blue White Porcelain Plum Blossom Jeoljimunpiltong
청화백자매화절지문필통 · 靑華白磁梅花折枝文筆筒

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis brush holder (piltong) was made in the late Joseon period at the Bunwon official kiln in Gwangju. It was shaped on a potter's wheel and fired using sand supports. The rim flares outward like a trumpet, and the lower body was trimmed during finishing into a form resembling a bamboo joint. The glaze is clear, the clay body is pale, and the surface has a relatively good lustre. The upper part of the body is decorated in underglaze cobalt blue: three circles were drawn with a compass, each enclosing a simplified painting of a cut plum branch (jeolji). The shape and condition of the foot ring show that careful attention was given through to the final stage of finishing.
