Munsusa Temple Stupa
문수사부도 · 文殊寺浮屠

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA stupa, or budo, symbolises a Buddhist monk's grave: after cremation, the monk's remains or relics (sari) are enshrined inside it. These two stupas at Munsusa Temple stand in the western of the temple's two stupa fields, where six stupas are arranged in a row; they are the second and third when viewed from the front. Both are in the same style, each part built on an octagonal plan, with a three-tiered pedestal supporting the body of the stupa, finished with a finial on top. They were erected in the Joseon period and show a fine sense of balance and delicate workmanship. They are also relatively large for stupas of their time, and closely follow the style of the west stupa of Borimsa Temple, a treasure, making them valuable material for the study of stupa styles.
