Donamseowonyugyeongsa Temple
돈암서원유경사 · 遯岩書院惟敬祠

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a private educational institution of the Joseon dynasty, founded in 1634, the twelfth year of King Injo, to hold memorial rites for revered scholars and to carry on their learning. It was first built to honour the scholarship and virtuous conduct of Kim Jang-saeng (1548–1631), but the ancestral tablets of Kim Jip, Song Jun-gil and Song Si-yeol were later added for enshrinement in Donamseowonyugyeongsa Temple, the shrine where the memorial rites are held. In 1660, the first year of King Hyeonjong, the academy received the name 'Donam' from the king and was elevated to a saaek seowon, an academy granted a royal charter and name plaque; it was also one of the 47 academies that survived when Heungseon Daewongun ordered the abolition of Confucian academies. Donamseowon is a historic academy that has produced many notable figures since the mid-Joseon period, and memorial rites are still held there every February and August.
