Dolsangungwancheong
돌산군관청 · 突山軍官廳

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the military officers' office (gwan-cheong) of Bangdapjin garrison, built in the early Joseon period to guard the coast. Bangdapjin belonged to the Jeolla Left Naval Headquarters; it was established in 1523, the 18th year of King Jungjong, and abolished in 1895, the 32nd year of Emperor Gojong. When Dolsan-gun County was established in 1896, most of the building was used as the county's administrative office. The office is presumed to have been built sometime between 1872 and 1895: the "Map of Bangdapjin", drawn in 1872, the ninth year of Emperor Gojong, shows the present site as a place where boats were moored, suggesting the office was built afterwards. The building has a U-shaped floor plan, and its roof is a hip-and-gable (paljak) roof whose profile from the side resembles the Chinese character for "eight" (八). Each section is made up of several rooms, and the building is enclosed by a wall of roughly hewn stones. In the Gunnae-ri area of Dolsan-gun today, remains of Bangdapjin's old fortress walls, gate sites, boat-building sites and steles survive, showing the important role the garrison played in coastal defence. Although the office building has a common U-shaped plan, its value lies in the fact that surviving examples of government-office architecture of this kind are rare.
