White Porcelain Relief-carved Si Design Bottle
백자양각시문병 · 白磁陽刻詩文甁

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis bottle has a rim that curls slightly and thickly outward, a long neck of even thickness, and a rounded body that is both stable and resilient in form. The white glaze, applied over a fine-quality clay body, has a faint bluish tinge and a good lustre. Carved in relief on the body is a poetic inscription that includes part of the verse of Li Bai's "Jiang Jin Jiu" ("Bring in the Wine"), extolling the pleasures of drinking and the bold, unrestrained spirit of Chinese heroes. This technique of adding relief-carved decoration to white porcelain arose in the late eighteenth century, during the reign of King Jeongjo, as an alternative to underglaze cobalt-blue decoration, and remained, into the nineteenth century, a refined technique applied only to particularly fine white porcelain. Among such pieces, examples like this one, with a poetic inscription carved in relief, are rather uncommon. The finish of the base is also neat and clean.
