옥천 옥주사마소 · 沃川 沃州司馬所

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is the Okju Samaso of the Okcheon region, a Joseon-period meeting hall where the saengwon and jinsa, holders of the two lower civil examination degrees, from the local county gathered to teach Confucian learning and discuss politics. It was built in 1654, the fifth year of King Hyojong of Joseon. According to the Record of the Repair of the Uichang, written by Song Si-yeol (pen name Uam), the building was made by dismantling and reassembling an uichang, a granary that had stored grain for the relief of the poor. It measures five kan across the front and two kan in depth, with a gable roof whose side profile resembles the shape of the Chinese character 人 (person). Four of the front bays have a toenmaru, a narrow wooden-floored veranda, behind which is a wooden-floored room on the right and an ondol, or heated, room and kitchen on the left. Inside are preserved a number of documents that reveal the character of Joseon-period literati, including the Gwanseong Samaan (register of Samaso members), the Hyangyak Gyean (register of the local compact association), and the Okcheon-gun Hyanggye Gyuyak (regulations of Okcheon County's local association).
