Standing Museong-ri Stone Buddha
무성리석불입상 · 武城里石佛立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Buddha statue is currently enshrined in the main hall of a small hermitage in Museong-ri, Chilbo-myeon, Jeongeup. Below the knees it is buried in the ground, and much of the portion that shows above ground is further concealed by the altar. The statue has a bare head that looks as though it is wearing a hood. The face is long and oval, and the mouth is carved protruding outward. The ears are long, reaching down to the neck, while the neck itself is rendered short. The three curved lines (samdo) conventionally carved on a Buddha's neck are instead depicted on the chest, and the robe draped over both shoulders forms U-shaped folds. The left hand shows its back with the fingertips pointing towards the ground, while the right hand is held against the chest, though its exact gesture is unclear. The statue's exposed height is 2.4 m and the width at the lower abdomen is 1.15 m; it is presumed to have been made during the Goryeo period.
