Boryeong Geumgangam Hermitage Stone Buddha and Bipyeon
보령금강암석불및비편 · 保寧金剛庵石佛및碑片

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis was a wondang, a votive shrine, built in 1412 (the 12th year of King Taejong) by the monk Yeongam, a disciple of the great master Muhak, to pray for the wishes of Lady Kwon, the consort of King Taejong, third king of Joseon. The construction was carried out by Kwon Hong, father of Lady Kwon, and his daughter, Lady Yi of the Oju Yi clan. The stone Buddha made at this time sits demurely on a two-tiered pedestal, holding a lotus bud evenly with both hands; it is presumed to be a Maitreya Buddha, and its material is sandstone. The stele that recorded the founding of Geumgangam Hermitage and the making of the stone Buddha survives only as a fragment, about half destroyed; only 16 lines and 241 characters remain on the bluish stone. This fragment is valuable as a record of royal Buddhist devotion in the early Joseon period and of the date when Geumgangam and the stone Buddha were made. Similar content is also recorded in a ridge-beam inscription made in the reign of King Yeongjo, which came to light recently during the dismantling of Geungnakjeon Hall.
