Seated Goheung Yongsan-ri Stone Bodhisattva
고흥용산리석조보살좌상 · 高興龍山里石造菩薩坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a massive stone bodhisattva image, 2.7 metres tall, located in Yongsan-ri, Duwon-myeon, Goheung County, South Jeolla Province. It is shown seated on a chair, with its right foot resting on the seat and rendered smaller than the rest of the body, giving it an unusual posture. It wears a tall crown carved with a small Buddha on its head. The oval face is full and fleshy, and together with the eyes, nose and mouth gives a heavy, somewhat dull impression. The body is sturdy, and the left arm, hanging down with a clenched fist, is rendered disproportionately large. Compared with the thick shoulders and forearms, the hands are far too small, and the waist is rendered thin, so that the figure lacks a sense of balance. The thin robe, worn over the left shoulder only, widens at the sleeve edge and curves downward. Judging from its seated posture on a chair, the small Buddha carved on the crown, and the unusual hand gesture, it is presumed to be a Maitreya Bodhisattva made during the Goryeo period.
