Seated Samneunggye Valley Valley Rock-carved Shakyamuni Buddha
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This seated Shakyamuni Buddha, 6 metres in height, is carved into a huge natural rock face in Bae-dong, Gyeongju, Gyeongsangbuk-do. The figure leans slightly backward, and its half-closed eyes seem to gaze down upon the sentient beings of this world. While the head and shoulders are carved deeply, giving them a strong sense of volume, the body is carved very shallowly. Judging from its overall style, the piece is presumed to be a rock-carved Buddha in the style that was popular in the late Unified Silla period.
