Yun Gwan Portrait
윤관 초상 · 尹瓘 肖像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a portrait of Yun Gwan (Lord Munsuk; d. 1111), a renowned general of Goryeo, consisting of two full-length paintings showing him in civil and military dress. Yun Gwan passed the state examination during the reign of King Munjong of Goryeo, founded a special military unit called the Byeolmuban, and rendered great service in Goryeo's campaigns to subjugate the Jurchen, including the building of nine fortresses on recovered territory. The portrait in civil official's robes shows him seated on a chair with both hands clasped in front of him, while the portrait in military armour shows him standing full-length, holding a bow. According to tradition handed down in the Papyeong Yun clan, Yun Gwan's portrait was originally kept at Malloesa Temple in North Hamgyong Province, and this painting is said to be a copy made from the one at Malloesa, though this is not certain. The figure of Yun Gwan appears to have been considerably deified, and in particular the armoured image resembles the Heavenly King figures seen in Buddhist paintings, as if it had become an object of folk worship.
