Standing Gosansa Temple Stone Buddha
고산사석불입상 · 高山寺石佛立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krGosansa Temple stands in a steep valley at Yonggang-ri, Jangpyeong-myeon, Jangheung County, South Jeolla Province. Originally only the temple site remained, and the standing stone Buddha lay broken and buried in the ground; in 1966 it was enshrined in a newly built main hall. The lower part of the statue and part of its halo, which had been damaged, were repaired with cement. Above the bare head rises a tall, topknot-shaped hair bun, and the oval face is full and plump. The robe covering the narrow shoulders falls in vertical lines. The hands, with both arms bent, are held against the chest, but their exact form is hidden by the folds of the robe. This gesture, concealed within the drapery, reflects the style seen in the group of stone Buddhas at Unjusa Temple in Hwasun, offering a glimpse of cultural exchange between regions at the time. The round head halo is divided by two raised lines, within which lotus petals are carved. The body halo is likewise encircled by two oval bands that wrap around the whole statue. It is regrettable that the lower part of the body cannot be seen, but the mood conveyed by the halo and the face resembles that of Buddha statues of Tang-dynasty China.
