Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Jujaeoryu, or Classified Conversations of Master Zhu, is a book originally compiled in Song-dynasty China by Li Jingde, who gathered together the questions and answers exchanged between Zhu Xi and his various disciples. It runs to a vast fifty volumes, and was essential reading for Korean Confucian scholars of the Joseon period as they studied Neo-Confucianism. It was first published in Korea in 1575, the eighth year of King Seonjo, but all copies were destroyed by fire during the Japanese invasions of Korea. It was republished under King Injo at the Yeongnam provincial government office, but this edition too was lost to fire. Later, in 1770, the forty-sixth year of King Yeongjo, the governor of Yeongnam had it published again by royal command, but over time this edition was also lost. Finally, between 1904 and 1905, scholars of Jinju published it once more, using 2,076 woodblocks, and it is these that make up the present Jujaeoryu woodblocks. The fact that scholars of Jinju came together to carry out such a major undertaking at a time when the fate of the Joseon dynasty was nearing its end is highly regarded.
