Yeowonchi Rock-carved Buddha Statue
여원치마애불상 · 女院峙磨崖佛像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krCarved into a rock below the summit of Yeowonchi Pass in Ibaek-myeon, Namwon, Jeonbuk State, this Buddha statue stands 2.5 metres tall with shoulders 1.09 metres wide. Traces on the front of the statue appear to be the remains of a structure, and roof-tile fragments are scattered around it, suggesting that a building once stood to enshrine the statue. The head is bare, with a broad, low topknot-shaped bun, and a halo is carved on the back of the head. The neck bears three folds (samdo), and the shoulders are broadly rendered, giving a robust impression. The robe is draped over both shoulders, and the right arm is bent up to the chest. The carving below the abdomen is unclear, and the statue is so badly damaged that it is difficult to examine in detail. An inscription on the east face of the statue records that it is connected with Yi Seong-gye.
