Seoneung Memorial Gate Stele, Jangseong
장성 서능 정려비 · 長城 徐稜 旌閭碑

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krA jeongnyeobi is a stele erected by the state at the entrance to the village where a loyal subject, filial child, or virtuous woman had lived, to honour their conduct and spirit; this stele honours the filial devotion of Seo Neung, a civil official of the reign of King Gojong of Goryeo. Having passed the state examination at the age of twenty, he entered government service and rose through various posts to become Munhasijung, or chief minister. Deeply filial from childhood, he resigned his post as Munhasijung and returned to his hometown to nurse his mother with utmost devotion when she fell ill. A physician said that only a green tree frog could cure her, but as it was midwinter none could be found; while he was in great distress over this, a green tree frog suddenly leapt into the medicine pot of its own accord, and when he pressed it out together with the medicine and gave it to his mother, she recovered. When King Gojong later heard of this, he honoured Seo Neung and had a stele erected in praise of his filial devotion. This stele, housed inside a jeongnyeogak, a small pavilion built to shelter such steles, has its inscription composed by Sa-am Bak Sun and its calligraphy written by Okbong Baek Gwang-hun.
