Daegok-ri Petroglyphs
대곡리암각화 · 大谷里岩刻畵

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krPetroglyphs are carvings made by prehistoric people on rocks or cave walls depicting symbols, objects, animals and other motifs, generally regarded as the product of ritual practices connected with agricultural fertility and abundance. The Daegok-ri Petroglyphs are carved into a rock face near the summit of a hill known as Bonghwangdae, and are the only prehistoric petroglyphs found in the Honam region. The carvings occur in two spots, each roughly 1-2m in size, with geometric patterns carved symmetrically top-to-bottom or side-to-side. Heavy erosion obscures the detail, but the carvings appear to depict human or animal faces. These petroglyphs were first reported to the academic world in 1991, and are very important material for understanding the prehistoric culture of the Jeonbuk region.
