Anyang Jungchosa Temple Site Three-story Stone Pagoda
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

The pagoda originally stood, collapsed, at a spot about 60 metres north-east of a pair of flagpole supports (danggan jiju), presumed to have been the central area of the temple precinct, but in 1960, when the Yuyu Industries factory was built there, it was moved and re-erected at its present location. The base is single-tiered, its foundation stones formed by fitting together several slab-shaped stones. Above this a tall, two-tiered rectangular support made of separate stones was placed, a technique adopted in Goryeo-period stone pagodas. The face stones are formed of four pieces fitted together, and the corner pillars are carved narrow and low in relief. The cover stone is formed of two pieces, with an eaves board lower than the height of the cover stone set beneath it, and a low pedestal for the pagoda body placed on top. Although the base is single-tiered, the face stones and the eaves board of the cover stone show a tendency toward simplification, and overall the pagoda reflects the style of stone pagodas that flourished mainly in the Gyeonggi region during the Goryeo period. Only the first storey of the pagoda body survives; it was cut narrower than the width of the base or the roof stones (okgaeseok, the stones that cover a pagoda or stone lantern like a roof), and corner pillars are carved in relief at both edges. The roof-stone supports are in four tiers on the first and second storeys, but reduced to three tiers on the third storey as the scale diminishes. The eaves are horizontal, and although the corners are damaged, their upward curve can still be confirmed. The rain-drip slope forms a steep, straight incline. Given that the pagoda body is small in scale compared with the roof stones and the base, and given the formalised treatment of the roof stones' rain-drip slopes, the pagoda is thought to have been built sometime after the mid-Goryeo period.
