This is a gilt-bronze Buddha statue, 1.04m in height, enshrined in the Daeungjeon Hall of Sunpyeongsa Temple in Sunchang. It was originally enshrined at a temple in Namwon, then moved to Damyang where it was kept privately, before being brought again to Sunpyeongsa Temple. The gilding has partially flaked from the face and chest, but overall the statue is in good condition. The facial expression is rather solemn, and the earlobes hang down long, reaching to the middle of the neck. The thick robe draped over both shoulders is carved with U-shaped folds that have lost some of their resilience, and the sash of the undergarment is tied in an X shape. Both hands are shown with the thumb and middle finger touching. Various relics were found inside the statue, but these were placed there again in 1946, and the original votive objects (bokjang, items sealed inside a Buddhist statue at its consecration) appear to have been lost. Overall the statue belongs to the Goryeo style, but the flat carving technique and the formalised rendering of the sash knot suggest that it was in fact made in the early Joseon period.
