Munikjeom Bujomyo and Historical Documents, Boseong
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

These are documents held at the Munikjeom Bujomyo, comprising documents drawn up by the descendants of a person of great merit to the state in order to secure their own treatment, together with documents received from the state. A bujomyo is a special privilege granting the permanent enshrinement of, and ancestral rites for, the spirit tablet of a person who rendered great service to the state. In the Joseon period, various such privileges and benefits were granted to the descendants of such figures. The documents relating to the Munikjeom Bujomyo here are various certificates confined to the late Joseon period (from the late 18th to the late 19th century). The surviving documents are as follows: ① Gyeongwando jemun, a memorial text delivered by a royally dispatched official (1787). ② Sugyo, a royal instruction (1811) – 8 pages. ③ Jeolmok 1, regulations (1833). ④ Jeolmok 2 (1833) – 4 pages. ⑤ Jeolmok 3 (1835). ⑥ Jeolmok 4 (1845) – 7 pages. ⑦ Gyeha samok, royally approved regulations (1836). ⑧ Jongjung wanmun, a certificate issued to the clan (1841) – 1 sheet. ⑨ Sangseo, petitions – 2 items. ⑩ Deungjang, a joint petition (1847) – 1 sheet. ⑪ Tongmun, a circular notice. ⑫ Sangseo, a petition (1856). ⑬ Gwanmun, an official document (1857), sent from the household of Princess Sungmyeong to the Munikjeom Bujomyo, ordering repayment of a debt of roughly 5,000 nyang. The value of these documents increases when they are kept together as a set, so it is somewhat regrettable that not all of them are preserved at the Munikjeom Bujomyo today. Nevertheless, they are valuable material for understanding the realities of local life as reflected through the bujomyo, a focal point for the lineage within local society.
