Baekjangam Hermitage, in Sannae-myeon, Namwon, North Jeolla Special Self-Governing Province, is a temple founded in the early 9th century, the same period as Silsangsa Temple. When Silsangsa Temple was reduced to ruins during the Japanese invasions, it is said that the monks of Silsangsa stayed at this hermitage for about 200 years. This seated bodhisattva image was originally kept inside Baekjangam Hermitage of Silsangsa Temple, but was stolen in May 1997 and recovered in September of the same year; it is now kept at Silsangsa Temple. The hair is gathered up high and tied in a topknot shape, over which a jewelled crown is worn. At the forehead the hair is rendered in undulating curves and falls in long strands past both ears down below the shoulders, a feature common to bodhisattva images of the late Goryeo and early Joseon periods. The face is close to square in shape, and the body, with rounded shoulders and a narrow width at the knees, gives an impression of refined elegance. The robe covers both shoulders, and an ornate necklace is depicted across the broadly exposed chest. The Seated Baekjangam Hermitage Bodhisattva is presumed to have been made in the late Goryeo period, and its present state of preservation is good.
