Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThese are the personal effects and relics of Master Seosan kept at Daeheungsa Temple in South Jeolla Province. When the Japanese invasions broke out in 1592, the 25th year of King Seonjo's reign, Master Seosan, by the king's special order, was made supreme commander of the monk armies of the sixteen sects of the eight provinces; at the advanced age of 73 he circulated proclamations throughout the country, rallied 1,500 monk soldiers, and served actively as their commander-in-chief. The relics are as follows. Gyoji are documents issued by the king to convey an order to a subject or to appoint a person to office; there are two of these. One, dated 1602, the 35th year of King Seonjo, appoints Master Seosan to a high monastic command; the other, dated 1788, the 12th year of King Jeongjo, when Pyochungsa Temple was built, was issued by King Jeongjo as an addition to the earlier edict, granting him the title "Pyochungseonsa". The book in Master Seosan's own hand summarises Seon (Zen) sayings of four masters — Mazu, Baizhang, Hunjeol and Linji — with pages one to six written in Master Seosan's own hand, followed by an addition in the hand of Samyeongdang. Master Seosan's robe and bowl comprise two kinds of prayer beads, a gold-brocade kasaya robe, a jade alms bowl, and spoons and chopsticks. Daeheungsa Temple, Haenam, was designated by Master Seosan, on his passing, as the temple to keep his robe and bowl, and today Daeheungsa preserves many relics of Master Seosan as well as artefacts related to monastic life of that era. Alongside them, Pyochungsa Shrine, where memorial rites are held for Samyeongdang and Cheoyeong, has also been restored. Administrative note: one gyoji, dated the sixth day of the eighth month of the 53rd year of the Qianlong era (1788), was delisted on being upgraded to Treasure No. 1357, "Relics of Master Seosan of Daeheungsa Temple"; the remaining gyoji, the robe and bowl, and the other items retain their status as Municipal/Provincial-designated Tangible Cultural Heritage.
