This Buddha statue is enshrined as the main image in the Daejeokgwangjeon Hall of Donghwasa Temple, Nami-myeon, Seowon-gu, Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province. It sits on a tall pedestal; its neck, which had been broken, was incorrectly restored, so the head is tilted slightly to the right. The robe flowing down from both shoulders forms U-shaped folds in front of the chest, rendered symmetrically, and wraps around the knees. The hands form a mudra in which the right index finger is grasped by the left hand, the reverse of the usual position for the wisdom-fist mudra. The pedestal has three tiers. The upper tier is decorated with a double-petalled lotus design adorned with elaborate flower stamens. The middle tier is octagonal, with pillars carved in relief at the corners; each face bears an arch-shaped panel containing a bodhisattva seated in a free pose, in one case with hands joined in prayer. Between the middle and lower tiers is a supporting stone. The lower tier is plain and simple compared with the upper one, and each face of its base is carved with a lion. Judging from the overall carving technique, the statue is presumed to date from the late Unified Silla to early Goryeo period.
