Wanju Songgwangsa Temple is said to have been founded in 867 by State Preceptor Bojo Chejing, and to have been rebuilt in the mid-Goryeo period by State Preceptor Bojo Jinul. In the Myeongbujeon Hall of Songgwangsa Temple, a statue of the Bodhisattva Ksitigarbha is enshrined as the principal image, with Bojejonja seated to its left, and figures of the Ten Kings (the underworld's ten judges), Vajra guardians (Inwang), and lions arranged on either side. The clay Ksitigarbha statue rests on a wooden lotus-patterned pedestal. Its face is full and serene, with evenly set eyes, nose and mouth; the ears, though not long, are large, giving the figure a dignified yet compassionate expression. The robe covers both shoulders and falls diagonally down over both arms. The right hand is raised to chest height with the thumb and middle finger joined, while the left hand rests on the knee, also with thumb and middle finger joined. Records found inside the Ksitigarbha statue reveal that the Ksitigarbha Triad and the statues of the Ten Kings were made together in 1640.
