A hyanggyo is a local Confucian educational institution built by the state to hold memorial rites for eminent Confucian scholars and to provide Confucian education and moral instruction for local residents. The date on which this hyanggyo was first built is not known. It is said to have been repaired in 1515, the sixth year of King Myeongjong of Joseon, by magistrate Hwang Jun-ryang, and after being burned down during the Japanese invasions of Korea (the Imjin War), it was rebuilt in 1615, the seventh year of King Gwanghaegun, and then moved to its present site in 1686, the twelfth year of King Sukjong. Myeongnyundang Hall, the central building of the educational quarters and the place where lectures were given, is said to have been rebuilt in May 1852, the third year of King Cheoljong, at the same time as the other buildings were repaired. The roof is a simple gable roof with wing-like extensions added at both gable ends, so that, seen as a whole, the roofline on the sides resembles the shape of the Chinese character for "eight" (八), giving it the character of a hipped-and-gable roof. It is a Joseon-period architectural heritage of relatively large scale and sturdy construction.
