KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is a stele erected at the historic site associated with Han Ran (韓蘭), founder of the Cheongju Han clan; its characters are so worn that they are difficult to read. It was erected in 1605, the thirty-eighth year of King Seonjo of Joseon, after Han Baek-gyeom, then magistrate of Cheongju, verified and located the site through historical research; his younger brother, Han Jun-gyeom, Vice Minister of Personnel, then wrote out a detailed account of Han Ran's life and had the stele set up so that all descendants could read and understand it whenever ancestral rites were held. At this time wito (位土), land set aside to cover the expenses of conducting the rites and related matters, was arranged, an altar was built, and a wall was raised around it to mark its boundary. It holds great historical value as a stele erected after the old site of the clan founder was verified through the historical-geographical research of Han Baek-gyeom, a leading scholar of historical geography in the seventeenth century and himself a descendant of the Cheongju Han clan.
