Songgwangsa Temple Wooden Three Royal Tablets

These are three wooden tablets placed at the front, between the triad of Buddha statues in Daeungjeon Hall. They are made in the same overall manner and form, but differ in some details. One of them, 2.28 m in height, bears on its front an inscription wishing the king long life, and on its back an inscription giving its date of production during the reign of King Injo, the sixteenth king of Joseon. The other two tablets are both 2.08 m in height, and their backs record in black ink that they were repaired in the sixteenth year of King Jeongjo (1792). Unlike other such tablets, which are usually inscribed with the names of buddhas or bodhisattvas, these are large works, over two metres tall, made for the king, the queen, and the crown prince. They are assembled from several joined wooden boards and are notable for their openwork carving of clouds and dragons. The carving is intricate and the tablets are large in scale; since both their date of production and their date of repair are known, they serve as an important reference point for dating Buddhist woodwork whose production dates are, in most cases, unknown.
