Standing Yangpyeong Sangjapo-ri Rock-carved Buddha
양평상자포리마애여래입상 · 楊平上紫浦里磨崖如來立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a rock-carved Buddha, engraved on a rock on the south-facing slope of the ridge west of Pasaseong Fortress. The surface has flaked away in places, including below the left eye, beneath the nostrils, and around the lips, and on the right side of the head and the left shoulder corrections to mistaken lines can be seen, suggesting the work of a local craftsman of modest skill. The head halo, representing the sacred light emanating from the crown of the Buddha's head, is depicted as two overly large concentric circles, and the pedestal is carved with almost straight lines inside, to the point that its lotus petals are barely recognisable. The feet are hidden beneath the robe and are not visible. The eyes, nose and mouth are carved large on the face, and the ears hang down long enough to reach the shoulders. The robe is worn bared over the right shoulder and covering the left, and flows down as far as the pedestal, showing an old style of wearing the robe that is rarely seen elsewhere in Gyeonggi-do. The right hand is held against the abdomen and the left hand is lowered while spread outward, but heavy erosion makes the shape of the hands difficult to make out. Although it shows the old method of wearing the outer robe that was popular in Silla, the large square face, the carving that has lost tension and resilience, and the unrefined treatment of the robe folds and other details suggest that this is a provincial work of the early Goryeo period. In particular, the broad usnisha, the outlines carved along both ears, and the square face with long, large eyes and a nose with round nostrils are all features that, though showing increasing formalisation and declining technique, appear to belong to the provincial style of Gyeonggi-do rock-carved Buddhas that runs from the Standing Rock-carved Buddha of Seongnamsa Temple in Anseong to the Seated Rock-carved Buddha of Sogo-ri in Icheon.
