Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krAt Gaesimsa Temple in Goesan-eup, Goesan-gun, North Chungcheong Province, a wooden seated Buddha and a wooden seated Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva made in the Joseon period are enshrined. The seated wooden Buddha, 85 cm in height, has small snail-shell curls of hair attached to the head, and the eyes, nose and mouth are harmoniously arranged to give an orderly impression. The three curved lines of the neck (samdo) are clearly rendered, and the figure wears a robe covering both shoulders. The thickly rendered drapery folds at the wrists and knees are a style particular to the Joseon period. The tips of the thumb and index finger are brought together, the right hand raised and the left lowered, expressing the hand gesture the Buddha made while preaching. The seated Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva, 72 cm in height, wears an elaborate crown on its head. The face is full and conveys compassion, and the neck bears the same three curved lines (samdo). The robe covering both shoulders gives an impression that is thick yet soft. The statues are generally in good condition, and on the evidence of the carving of each part and their refined stylistic technique, they are judged to be outstanding works of the late Joseon period.
