Munsusa Temple Ksitigarbha Ten Kings Buddhist Painting and Votive Objects (set)
KOGL Type 4Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is a single Ksitigarbha and Ten Kings Buddhist painting (taenghwa), painted in colour on silk, together with 29 votive objects (bokjang, items placed inside a Buddhist painting or statue at its consecration), including a votive dedication text. The votive objects consist of one dedication text, six letters, fourteen almanacs, one huryeongtong (a container holding consecrated items), five treasure vessels (obobyeong), two dharani (Buddhist ritual incantation texts), and others. It is valuable material that shows well the character of Buddhist culture in the western part of South Chungcheong Province in the late Joseon period. Besides the painting itself it includes a wide range of votive objects, and the presence of letters relating to the painting's production makes it a very special example. The inscription at the bottom of the painting records the date of production, 1774, together with the temple where it was made and the names of the painter and the sponsors who made the vows. Moreover, letters and almanacs of the period were found on the back of the backing paper, making this an extremely important source for understanding the society of the time, and giving it great religious and scholarly value.
