Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis stone image of the Buddha of Medicine (Yaksayeorae) stands at Seogisa Temple in Yullyang-dong, Sangdang-gu, Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province. Holding a medicine bowl in its left hand, it can be identified as an image of the Buddha of Medicine, believed to free all beings from the suffering of illness. The halo behind the body was made separately, and the neck, once broken, has been reinforced with cement. Atop the head rises a low top-knot, and the face is full and fleshy. Over the broad, dignified shoulders a robe is draped only on the left side, its folds falling in parallel lines to cover the wrists and reach below the knees. The plump chest is largely exposed, its nipples rendered realistically, a notable feature, and the right hand is shown with its fingertips pointing towards the ground. The image is thought to date from the Goryeo period; it stands 86 cm tall in total, with a shoulder width of 42 cm.
