Nonsan Sangdo-ri Rock-carved Buddha
논산상도리마애불 · 論山上道里磨崖佛

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThe Nonsan Sangdo-ri Rock-carved Buddha is made in the form where the body is incised in line on a huge natural rock face, while the head was carved separately and attached. The head has a high usnisha (the protrusion symbolising wisdom) and smooth, unadorned hair; the eyes are closed, the mouth is narrow, and the face is long and slender. Three folds are shown on the neck, and the body is incised with the monastic robe draped over both shoulders in the tongyeon style. This rock-carved Buddha is striking for its accomplished carving and its warm, benign expression, and its concise yet realistic carving technique marks it, in stylistic terms, as a typical Buddha image of the Goryeo period. Standing some six metres tall, with its body incised on a natural rock face and its head made and set on separately, it follows the typical Goryeo-period form of rock-carved Buddha, and is valued as important material for the study of Buddhist statuary.
