Seated Munsusa Temple Rock-carved Buddha
문수사마애여래좌상 · 文殊寺磨崖如來坐像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis is a rock-carved Buddha incised in line on a small boulder 1.7 m high, located beside the Sansingak (a shrine to the mountain spirit) at Munsusa Temple in Hwangsan-dong, Gimje. Above the bald head rises a large topknot-shaped bun, and the head is depicted as thick and rounded, as though wrapped in a cap. The face is round and full, and the eyes are rendered long and narrow. The nose, continuing from the eyebrows, is rather large, and the area around the mouth is carved in so as to make the nose stand out all the more. Seated on a lotus-shaped pedestal, the figure appears stable owing to the width of its knees. The right knee is slightly damaged, apparently because of the original shape of the rock. The technique of line-carving, the bald head that looks as if it wears a cap, and the large, thick nose are all features that clearly show the characteristics of a rock-carved Buddha of the Goryeo period. It is a rare example of a Buddha image carved using a flat rock, and is therefore of great value.
