Standing Uiseong Jeongan-dong Stone Buddha
의성정안동석조여래입상 · 義城井安洞石造如來立像

Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.krThis Buddha statue stands in Jeongan-ri, Danbuk-myeon, Uiseong-gun, North Gyeongsang Province. Despite its large body, it somehow appears to lack vitality and holds an awkward pose. The square face and flat body show a formulaic quality that reflects the characteristics of Buddhist statues of the Goryeo period. The robe covering both shoulders clings to the body, falling in wave-like folds. Inside the collar, which opens widely at the chest in a U-shape, an undergarment tied with a sash is depicted, and a stone that once served as its pedestal now lies in front of the statue. Although the right hand is missing and there is some minor damage, this is an outstanding work that well displays the style of Buddhist statues of the late Unified Silla period.
