Standing Uijeongbu Yaksuseonwon Wooden Bodhisattva
KOGL Type 1Korea Heritage Service · khs.go.kr

This is a wooden bodhisattva statue, standing, wearing a separately made crown on its head and ornaments on its body. Not only can its date of production be inferred, but it also possesses a graceful and beautiful bearing. Among the sacred deposits (jewels, texts and other items placed inside the chest when a Buddhist statue is made or repainted) found inside the statue, a votive text states that in 1897 the statue was repainted when it was moved here from an area of Gyeongsang-do at the foot of Jirisan Mountain. The bodhisattva stands in a neat and elegant pose atop a double-layered lotus pedestal in full bloom, its whole body covered by robes, with one hand raised and the other lowered. The crown worn on the head is very large in proportion to the face and is richly decorated with various floral patterns carved in openwork, making it extremely splendid. At the crown of the head rises a high topknot, and the hair is neatly arranged. The sidelocks twist once at the ears before falling in two strands over the front of the shoulders. The head is large relative to the body, and the upper body is comparatively short. The plump, rounded cheeks and small, gently closed mouth give the face a childlike impression. Although the historical circumstances of its production are unknown, this is a precious bodhisattva statue of outstanding craftsmanship, representative of the beauty of the first half of the 17th century.
